Background, Format and Scoring

The Single’s League was started in May, 2015 by Doug Lyburn who has continued to run it. There are two divisions with 8 or 10 players playing a best of 3 set match against each other, with the 3rd set a professional tie breaker (up to 10 points). In order to keep things interesting, the points are awarded as follows:

  • 1 point for winning the match with a bonus if you win in straight sets
  • 1 point for each set that you win.

Thus, if you win in straight sets you get 4 points and your opponent gets none. If you lose in 3 sets, you still get 1 point and your opponent gets 3.

The competition started on 1st June and was due to finish on 30th September. However, an extension was agreed till 11th October. The club has purchased trophies to be presented to the winners of each division.

The Singles League has been a huge success and answered a real demand in the club for some competitive singles play. It is, therefore, hoped to continue the League next summer.
