News for Members by Jane Bowden
A lot has been happening at the club over the past few weeks and there is some important information here so please read to the end!
The plan is that OTB’s last coaching session will be on Saturday 1st July and the new programme will start from 3rd July. As explained before, we expected that we would have a little more time to get the full details of the new programme confirmed so please bear with us while we finalise details. Our basic plan though, is to initially have the same pattern of provision as OTB did and to build on that so that there are additional sessions for individuals, groups, adults, juniors etc. throughout the week. Obviously people will not want to commit to anything until the full details of timings, levels, cost etc. are available so we will try to get these out as soon as possible. Although membership reminders have gone out (the year officially begins on 1st April), some parents may wish to wait until they see details of the new programme before re-joining. However, it’s worth remembering that membership of the club gives extensive access to the courts outside of official coaching sessions for a very reasonable annual fee.
As part of the club’s commitment to encouraging youngsters, Sunday afternoons were designated as Family Social play for adults, parents/carers and younger players. Now that the weather is beginning to warm up, it would be good to get this going again.
Match practice (Wednesday and Thursday evenings)
It would be good to use the opportunity of these sessions to try out partnerships and to play against members of the same (or other) teams to sharpen up our match play. Please try to make it to these sessions wherever possible so that captains can check out the talent on offer! Please also remember that men are very welcome on Thursday evenings to provide the ladies with some challenging practice!
Unfortunately Cindy has decided that she needs to have more time with her family so she attended her last committee meeting this week. She was thanked profusely for all her hard work for the club as captain of various teams and as ball steward. She will be missed very much on court too. Thanks to Dean who has taken over as ball steward.
Ruman has agreed to join the committee, so with Saul and him, the average age has plummeted! We could just do with a few more ladies to join in as I’m beginning to feel a bit outnumbered!
Chairperson: Bob wishes to ‘retire’ at the end of September at the latest so please, if you would be prepared to take on this role, ably supported by the committee, please have a word with him.
Men’s 4th Team captain: This was a new team last year and was introduced as a way of giving juniors/newer players a chance to play league tennis alongside some more experienced players. This is a really important way of encouraging and developing youngsters. In view of the need to have people able to drive to away matches, we’d like to endure that at least 2 juniors out of the 6 players in each team. Again, please let me know if you’d be willing to take this on. We already have a small group of very keen youngsters.
The club has been allocated 5 pairs of tickets for the championships. Full details are on the noticeboard including the sign up sheet. Please ensure that you are eligible before signing up, indicate your preferences and make sure you have signed up before next Sunday lunchtime (23rd April). We’ll do the draw on Sunday afternoon.
We are slowly making progress with the kitchen. The flooring has been chosen and we will then need to sort the decoration and possibly tiling.
Anyone who can give some advice on decorating/tiling, or could lend a hand, please let me know.
We spent a lot of money last year on the courts and this work will be finally completed with the spreading of more sand on Tuesday afternoon (weather permitting) Thanks to Chris for organising this.
Sunday 2nd July
Please make a note in your diary of this important date! It is Final’s Day and…the AGM. Last year we had a record turnout to the AGM so let’s do the same again. Oh, and don’t forget to sign up for the tournament, either online or on the board.
