Celebration Dinner | Membership Drive | Wimbledon Draw | Volunteers | 3rd Mixed Team | Concert for Prostate Cancer | New Season
News for Members by Jane Bowden
There’s a lot of news!
Finton’s again did us proud with some excellent food and service. In honour of all her work and commitment to the club over many years and in many roles, Liz was presented with an inscribed crystal bowl and a certificate giving her life membership. I can’t work out how to add photos to this but I will try to post some on the club Facebook page and website.
With help and advice from Dennis, our Webmaster, we are having a membership drive, particularly for ladies and people in the 20 to 40 age group. Please could you ‘like’ the posts on the website/Facebook and repost so we can spread the word. If there are any local websites or other advertising opportunities please forward the ad – we really need to be recruiting in time for the new season.
We have 5 pairs of Wimbledon tickets to allocate via a draw (unless only 5 people want them!). I will be putting sign up notices at the club with full details, and also a notice about eligibility. Please do not sign up if you do not have a BTM number and have not opted into the draw this year.
The club is run for everyone’s benefit by a small group of volunteers – the committee and captains. If we do not have people in these roles, then we do not have a club. The roles have been ‘job shared’ very successfully in the past which obviously cuts down on the work and it’s often good to have someone else to discuss things with. Current vacancies:
- Chairperson – Male or female. Chairs committee meetings and the AGM and will be a key person in further developing the club.
- Captain of the Men’s 4th team – a new team last year which was added to give younger players (including juniors) the chance to play matches. Mark did a good job last year but doesn’t wish to continue.
- Ball Steward – Cindy has done a great job on this for many years (as well as being a captain) and has got the system set up pretty well, so it’s really a case of keeping things going with buying, monitoring and allocating balls for matches and social play. Unfortunately, Cindy has decided to leave the club in order to give more time to her family – she’s certainly going to be missed
We are all busy people with demands on our time, but without people being prepared to take their turn with jobs, the club will not be able to run.
3rd Mixed Team
Reluctantly we have withdrawn this team from the league due to ongoing problems with getting people to commit to playing.
The new kitchen should arrive on Monday and be largely constructed/installed by Wednesday next week. The morning players please note that your refreshment service may be restricted!
Concert for Prostate Cancer
In an unashamed plug for my own choir, we will be singing at Attenborough Church on Saturday, April 1st at 7.00pm. Promoted by the Lions, it’s a mixed concert, so it isn’t just the Wollaton Singers. All proceeds are going to Prostate Cancer UK. It would be great to have support.
The nights are drawing out and the clocks will soon be going forward, so it’s time to get back to the club in the evenings and enjoy the lovely setting, the banter and the game!
