8s Tournament | Winter Play | Teams | Singles League | Grounds, clubhouse and maintenance | Great British Tennis Weekend T shirts | Coaching | Website | Committee Meeting
Many thanks to Liz for organising the 8s tournament last weekend. We were fortunate with some good weather and a delightful tea. The winner was Dr Alison Hammond. Thanks to everyone who came along, especially Mattias Hill who joined us.
The club also sent some flowers to Liz to wish her a speedy recovery and we hope that she will be back playing very soon.
Sadly, the days are getting shorter and we will soon be unable to play in the evenings at the club. However, thanks to Mike Ab, Saul and a number of others, there WILL be floodlit play this winter. The Tennis Centre has introduced a scheme whereby a person can join and set up a Direct Debit for £10 per month. They can then book an outdoor court for free during that month. Although some people may like to take advantage of this scheme for their own arranged fours, there will be a Ladies and Men’s match practice night on a Wednesday from 6 till 8 where team players can just turn up to play. At the moment the plan is to book 3 courts at a cost to players of £2 for the whole session to cover the cost of balls and the cost of the Direct Debits. Balls will be provided by the club and the first session will be on Wednesday 14th October. As at George Spencer, the idea will be to share the courts to allow for men’s and ladies’ doubles but there will be some mixed, if numbers require it.
In the meantime, it might be a good idea to start Team Practice nights at 5pm instead of 6, wherever possible, to make the most of the light.
There is an extra ladies’ team in the winter league (2 in all). The fixtures meeting is this week and the new schedule will be posted on the website. If any new member is interested in playing league tennis and hasn’t been asked, please contact me and I will let the appropriate captain/s know.
Doug has done a brilliant job organising the new Singles League and it has clearly met a real need in the club since it has been so well supported. The final date for matches is Sunday October 11th and the winners will be declared according to the league positions on that date. There will be a presentation to the winners at the next Committee meeting on 9th November. Results will also be shown on the website.
Grounds, clubhouse and maintenance
Thanks to Chris Metcalfe for organising the skip which is now in the car park. The hope is to give the clubhouse and grounds a good clear out of all the rubbish which has accumulated over the years, in particular the carpet (which unfortunately does not suit our purpose) and the rubbish from the hedge which we cut down at the last work day. The plan is to have another working party on Saturday 10th October starting at 12.30 to cut the rest of the hawthorn hedge, clean up/weed the edges of the courts (especially the self set saplings) and to shift the rubbish into the tip. If lots of people come down to help this should be done very quickly and we can all start playing tennis at the normal time. In the meantime, if anyone can help by throwing the bits of carpet or the garden rubbish in the car park into the skip that would be really helpful. The rubbish in the builders’ bag is from the big hedge and should be removed by the contractor sometime this week.
For your information the tree work is being carried out by a contractor (the hawthorn trees, holly and elder trees – all on the right of the clubhouse near the sheds) and we hope to get this organised very shortly.
The shed roof is in a dreadful state and needs replacing (wood and felt) once the elder trees have been removed. Does anyone have the skills, tools etc. to help with this? Others will help with the donkey work I’m sure!
Great British Tennis Weekend T shirts
We were fortunate in getting a large number of T shirts for volunteers to wear at the last GBTW so that visitors could identify club members quickly and easily. We’d like to make sure that these are available for next year so, if you have one, could you please leave it in the clubhouse for Cindy to collect (or give it to her).
- Juniors: The flyer at the club re junior coaching and the programme for the winter. This will include floodlit tennis at George Spencer school.
