Hopefully you are aware of 2 really important events at the club this Saturday, 16th May.
Great British Tennis Weekend
This runs from 1.30 to 3.30 and is a key part of our membership drive. As with last year, it will consist of a number of FREE and fun tennis related activities (cardio tennis, tennis express etc.) lead by our coaches from On the Ball and aimed at a very wide range of ages and abilities. Equipment provided, but please wear suitable footwear. Free refreshments!
Please continue to spread the word/advertise the event to friends (Twitter, Facebook), colleagues, schoolmates etc. Ideally we need people to sign up to activities by going onto clubspark.lta.org.uk/OpenDays/, as that will help with planning, but, if they don’t do that, they can still just turn up.
On the day we need membership (adults and juniors) support to assist with
- preparing the clubhouse/grounds: putting up bunting, setting out chairs, sorting refreshments etc. from about 11 onwards
- serving refreshments
- Meeting and greeting/registering/farewelling! – there will be a registration table in the car park and we will need people to man this through the afternoon to ensure that participants get information/freebies and we get contact details.
- Helping the coaches: Ross and our very own Daniel and Andy Gardiner will be doing the organising of activities, but if a few members could participate too in each of them, that would be helpful, especially the ‘Free Play’
- Clearing up afterwards
- Showing/telling everybody what a fantastic club we are! There will be info on club activities and various special offers on membership/coaching etc., including a new 8 week temporary membership supported by the LTA.
And finally, could any member helping (including Juniors please) wear a bright blue t shirt/top if possible. We have a few free T shirts in this colour from the LTA but there won’t be enough for everybody and it would be good if you can be easily recognised as a club member/helper.
Immediately after the GBTW (4pm) we will be holding the AGM. It is hoped that members will stay on for this. No-one will be pressurised into being on the Committee! However, we do need members to know what is going on at the club and to give any feedback/ideas. Also, if anyone is keen to join us that would be most welcome. We meet about 6-8 times a year. Usually the AGM is a fairly short meeting and we might even get some tennis in afterwards, if anyone has any energy left!
The clubhouse is looking extremely tired and was mentioned by many members in the survey done a few years ago. The Committee has looked into various options for replacing the carpet tiles (some reckon they have been down for 30 years or so!) but the quotes we have received are around £2500 including fitting. Does anyone have access to/knowledge of any alternatives for flooring that might be a bit more reasonable?
Are now due.
A reminder that men are welcome to play on Thursday evenings (our traditional Ladies’ Night) but that if there are enough ladies, then ladies doubles will take priority over mixed (the opposite to Saturdays. Another alternative would be to change this to Monday night (so it’s not immediately after Men’s night on a Wednesday). If this would be better for people perhaps we can discuss this and make a decision at the AGM. Alternatively please email me with your views. Monday or Thursday?
To Dawn for taking on the captaincy of the ladies’ first team, to Mike Ab (who I missed out as a retiring captain from the Men’s 3rd team) and to our phantom gardener (Chris Metcalfe?) who has done a great job tidying up the grounds.
It has been suggested that we ask members if they have any connections with companies which refurbish offices and shops as they might have access to some second hand carpet tiles. Could you please keep an eye out for any such refurbishments going on, or even if you have some spare flooring yourselves. Some of the area to be replaced (the changing rooms, toilet, kitchen area) could be done in something different so it doesn’t necessarily have to be a very large single amount.
Pay and Play
A reminder that Pay and Play is now running on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 till 8pm and Wednesday mornings. Ross has now finished his finals (hurrah!) so will be around the club a lot more. OTB have clarified the cost for the sessions as £5 for non members and £2.50 for members. Don’t forget to point this out to potential new members! Contact Ross for further details or just turn up.
The courts have now been treated with moss killer but this will take a while to be fully effective so take care when they are damp.
Looking forward to seeing the club really buzzing on Saturday!
