Dear All

This will be held in the clubhouse at 4pm on Saturday 16th May. This gives people the opportunity to play both before and after the meeting. This year in particular it is vital that people attend as there are some very important decisions to be made about the club. In addition, it demonstrates support for the committee who keep the club running (relatively) smoothly!

Unfortunately, Sorriya has tendered her resignation as Club Secretary. This is a vital role and we will need to fill it ASAP. If you might be interested in helping with this please let Bob Bridges or Mike Abrahamson know or ask Sorriya for further information on what is involved. Many thanks to Sorriya for her efforts over the past years during what has been a very difficult period at work.

Social Events

The start of season dinner will be at Fintons Bakehouse, Breaston on Friday 27th March, meeting at 7 for 7.30pm sit down. The menu has been circulated separately with an invitation to have aperitifs on arrival. I now need to confirm numbers so you must inform me if you/your partner intend coming to this meal by Saturday 14th March. Ideally, I would like to have food choices at this point also and an indication of whether you would like aperitifs (fresh orange and/or Prosecco).

Winter Play

Play at George Spencer will finish on Thursday 26th March as the clocks go forward the following weekend and normal Wednesday and Thursday match practice will start the following week.

Although the courts are much better following the frosts, there is some moss build up again. We are in the process of getting this treated, but, in the meantime, please take care, especially on the hard court.

Ross, our OTB club coach, is available for lessons for both adults and children although he will be doing his finals next term. Contact him on 07752227815. On The Ball continue to run group coaching sessions and holiday tennis camps for children.

We are also trying to organise some Thursday night coaching for ladies’ team practice for those interested.

Matches and Teams

Bad news for the ladies, I’m afraid, as the person running the leagues misread an email and deleted both our ladies’ teams from the summer short format league. This means there will be only one ladies’ team and that is in the 6 set format league. We will make sure this is rectified next year but is very frustrating for those of us who enjoy matches but prefer the 4 set format. One possibility is that we can arrange some ‘friendlies’ maybe? There will continue to be 3 men’s and 3 mixed teams – one long format and 2 short format.

In order to build links with the University (and try to persuade some graduates who are staying in the area to consider our club, post university) we are having some matches. Doug has arranged a match between the students and the second men’s team on Sunday 22nd March at 2pm. Only the fourth court will be available for social play but people are welcome to come and support and to make the students welcome. The ladies event is likely to be after Easter.

Leagues and Rule Change

All three first teams (men’s, ladies’ and mixed) have done well this winter season and potentially could win their league and/or gain promotion. Well done.

Please note that there is a change to scoring in the long format summer league, i.e. the 6 set format. As the LTA computer cannot cope with a 6 all draw, a normal 7 point tie break will be played at 5 all. This change only affects the first teams.
