In the gallery are some photos from a dinner given by the Committee, past and present, to honour David Yorke’s hundreds of years of service to the Committee and the Club. Maybe a slight exaggeration! He was presented with an engraved cut glass fruit bowl, awarded Vice Presidency and made a life member (although he says he will continue to pay his subs!). The dinner was held at Finton’s Bakehouse in Breaston which opened specially for us in the evening. Many thanks to Lorraine who did all the negotiations with Fintons, sourcing the gift and to Cindy for the very elegant certificate. Thanks also to Bob for a very entertaining speech and to Paula, our President, for doing the presentations.
As we behaved ourselves so well, Fintons have agreed to have us back, potentially, for our start of season dinner. As with Crème there will be a limited 3 course meal which will need to be preselected. Unlike Crème we will have the place to ourselves and it is BYO for alcohol. I am in the process of negotiating with Fintons about this unless anyone feels strongly about going elsewhere. Please let me know. And if you did not express an interest before in the start of season dinner, could you let me know if you and your partner would be interested as numbers may be limited.
Hiring George Spencer courts has been a successful new venture for the club this winter (thanks Mike) and we have managed to break even on the deal. No doubt it will continue until the clocks go forward next month so please make the most of this facility.
Our courts seems to be much better following the heavy frosts although we do still need to keep an eye on moss growth as the weather warms up. Once they dry out a little we will need to start regular brushing again. Sorry!
Many thanks to everyone who has now registered their interest in Wimbledon tickets, including Juniors. If you are having trouble with the website then just check that you are registered as a British Tennis member. This is free. If you are still having problems then there is a phone number on the email I sent round before.
Ross, our OTB club coach, is available for lessons for both adults and children. Contact him on 0775 2227815. On The Ball continue to run group coaching sessions and holiday tennis camps for children.
Increasing club membership remains a prime objective, so if you have any suggestions please let a member of the Committee know. We will be running the Great British Tennis Weekend open day again this year on a date to be confirmed. We are also trying to build links with Nottingham University via Matt and Chris from OTB. It is hoped to have ‘friendly’ matches against their ladies’ and men’s teams. We would like to encourage those about to leave the University and who wish to remain in the area to consider Attenborough as their ‘post Uni’ club. If you see new people wandering into the courts please encourage them by providing information and a warm welcome.
