Summer matches are nearly completed and it’s great to be able to report that the Men’s first team, under the captaincy of Chris Lacey, has won League Division 4B and will therefore be promoted next summer. Well done everyone. Chris has also taken on the organisation of the Sunday night indoor league team. Other teams have also done well and full reults will be circulated once the season has finished.
Winter Leagues will be starting soon. Many thanks to Doug, Bob, Mike Ab and Chris L who went to the fixtures meeting this week. With the number of teams which we have entered this year (including an extra mixed team) we will need to have 2 matches on some Sundays. This will only be occasionally, but you do need to check start times and court availability carefully once the fixture list is circulated. This will be especially important to people who intend playing social tennis on Sunday afternoons. The new fixture list will shortly be up on the website.
Thanks to Mike Ab we will continue to have some evening play through the winter. As from Thursday 2nd October we will have 3 brand new floodlit courts available from 6 till 8pm at George Spencer school near to Bardill’s roundabout. See map is below. Cost is £3 initially and may be reviewed as we have to cover the cost of the hire. Balls will be provided. Please note that the first night will be very busy with cars as there is a big meeting at the school. However, there are some spaces which will be saved for us near to the tennis courts. The priority for these sessions will be ladies’ and men’s doubles, although there may be some mixed if we need to fill a court. Mike and John will be organising it initially.
In future subscriptions may be paid by bank transfer but members must notify the Treasurer/Membership secretary if this is what they will do so that records can be maintained. More details later.
No-one responded about an ‘End of Season’ meal so the Committee has decided to organise a ‘Start of Season’ meal next year.
Liz is organising an afternoon 8s tournament on Saturday 25th October starting at 1.30pm. This is a fun, social tournament with tea etc. so make a note in your diaries now! Although people can join the tournament later, it is better if you get there for the start.
On the Ball are running lots of initiatives to increase both junior and senior membership. There will soon be flyers available with advertisements for special rates of subscription for October as well as half term ‘Holiday Camps’. Please use these to advertise the club in local areas. We need to increase membership, especially in the 20 to 40 age range to keep the club going. We are also trying to attract new members from the University and local employers.
We are trying to get the artificial grass courts cleaned before the winter. There is quite a lot of moss growing again which is likely to become slippery when damp. Unfortunately the last time we booked the company to do the clean the weather prevented them, which is why it still needs doing. Courts will be out of action for a few days probably, so look out for further information.
